Viroqua Outshoots Beaver Dam 28 to 12

Beaver Dam took the long road to Viroqua on Friday evening and participated in a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find the back of the net. The last time the teams met was January 6th and Viroqua won 7-0.

The first period proved to be a prelude of things to come. Viroqua outshot the Beaver Dam 9-4 and the period ended with both teams tied at 0. The Blackhawks were called for a tripping penalty with 39 seconds remaining in the period allowing Beaver Dam to start the second period on the power play.

The Beavers picked up a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct at 2:28 of the second period. Viroqua was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Beaver Dam collected another penalty. They were called for roughing at 4:10. Once again their penalty kill unit were up to the task. The third penalty of the period, once again on Beaver Dam, proved to be their undoing. While trying to kill off a tripping penalty assessed at 10:28 of the period, Beaver Dam found themselves on the defensive against Viroqua's unrelenting power play pressure. There was a scramble in front of the Beaver's net. Viroqua's Freya Rising was able to just slip the puck far enough to see white between the goal line and puck to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead with 4:55 showing on the clock. Viroqua kept that score at the end of two periods.

Beaver Dam collected two more penalties early in the third period and killed them both off. Viroqua picked up a penalty for tripping with 9:40 remaining in regulation. The Blackhawks kept the Beavers from scoring on their power play opportunity. The Blackhawks were called for icing with 2:12 showing on the clock. Beaver Dam called their timeout. When both teams returned to the ice for the face-off in the Blackhawks' defensive zone, Beaver Dam left their goalie on the bench. Gabby Olson was able to get a shot off and scored an empty net goal at 15:56 of the third. Beaver Dam's Emily Smedema returned to the net with the Beavers trailing 2-0. Viroqua collected a penalty for hooking at 16:09 of the third. The Beavers took advantage of the opportunity to pull their goalie. The Blackhawks kept Beaver Dam from scoring and held on to a 2-0 victory.
