By Mike Hammett WiPH Staff, 01/08/23, 3:00PM CST

The Rock County Fury tried to rally against the visiting Viroqua Blackhawks Saturday in Janesville. The whole game they were able to keep it close with a chance to tie late.

Viroqua's Rachel Simonson however proved to be too much. Simonson notched a hat trick with two power play goals and a shorthanded goal to lead Viroqua past Rock County 3-2 in a badger conference game.

Rock  County got the scoring started first. Fury Freshman Ava Kligora was able to get a loose puck in the crease on  rebound and tapped the puck in for a 1-0 lead.

That's when Simonson got going.

She evened the game late in the first period with the first of her two power play goals. In the first period Viroqua outshot the Fury 20-8.

In the second period Viroqua tallied two more times. They almost had 3 but a penalty shot was stopped by Fury goalie Jillian Traver.  The Blackhawks made it a 2-1 game on the power play goal by Simonson. Rock County was able to get a chance to tie with a power play chance. The puck was picked up by Rachel Simonson and she got past 2 defenders and went in alone and scored for a 3-1 lead thru 2 periods.

Viroqua didn't score in the third period, but the Fury were able to bring the game within a goal. This time it was Fury leading scorer Emma Kligora who was able to get the loose puck in the crease and get it in the net for a 3-2 Viroqua lead with 2:49 left. The Fury seemed to get some adrenaline running  and almost had the game tied. With time running short Emma Kligora had the puck and tried to flip the puck up under the crossbar but the puck got deflected off the goalies helmet  ending  the Fury's chance of a tying the game.

The Fury saw their season record fall to 5-8 on the season.

The Blackhawks improved to 5-3.

Lillian Tambourine had 28 saves for Viroqua. Jillian Traver made 45 for the Fury. Rock County hosts Beaver Dam Monday. Viroqua has a game Tuesday at Coulee Region.
