The Hayward Hurricanes and Bay Area Ice Bears came into the 2022 Wisconsin Prep Hockey Girls Holiday Classic as the #1 and #1 ranked teams in the state.

The #1 ranked Hurricanes came in after winning their opening round game 9-2 over the Rock County Fury and their second round game 4-3 over the Warbirds in double overtime.

The #2 ranked Ice Bears won their opener against Black River Falls 4-1, and followed up with an 4-1 win over Fox Cities.

True to form, the Ice Bears and their overall team speed took home the Championship trophy with a 4-1 win over the Hurricanes.

Faye Brunke opened the scoring at 3:41 of the first period to cap off a three-on-one and mad scramble as the Ice Bears swarmed the Canes. Claire Gerarden and Rachael Beeck were credited with the assists. The rest of the period was spent largely in the Canes defensive zone as the Ice Bears speed and relentless forecheck would not them out.

The Ice Bears added to their lead at 2:47 of the second period when Brynn Osbahr knocked in an Addison Gady rebound to make it 2-0. Julianne Bradford extended the lead to three at 7:50 when she cut around the defense and swept in front of the net. Canes goalie Makenna Hutchison got a piece of the puck, but it managed to trickle in for the 3-0 lead.

With time winding down in the second period Riley Sprenger got Hayward on the board with a shot from the point that ricocheted through heavy traffic on the power play.

Unfortunately for the Canes that would be it, and Kristina Kruse added an empty netter in the waning moments of the third period to give the Ice Bears a 4-1 win.

Anna Byczek stopped 15 of 16 in the win for the Ice Bears, while Hutchison stopped 23 of 26 for the Hurricanes in the loss.
