If the opening salvo of the Wisconsin Prep Hockey Holiday Classic was any indication, the tournament looked to be in great shape for the 2022 edition.

The Fox Cities Stars and Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Sabers faced off in the opening game of the classic, and it was a barn-burner with an eventual 2-0 Fox Cities win.

Fox Cities scored in the first period just after their first power play expired. Teagan Tomoda took a feed from Megan Tesky and buried it for the 1-0 lead.

They would score again in the third period, this time on the power play. Maleiyah Streck netted the goal on a feed from #9 Evie Mursau.

Ella Sciborski stopped all 27 shots she faced for the Stars in the shutout win. Kasandra Herr stopped 14 of 16 in the loss.

If the Fox Cites and Chippewa Falls/Menomonie game was a show case in two evenly matched teams, the Bay Area and Black River Falls game was a showcase for Black River Falls goaltender Sydney Magnuson.

Magnuson stood on her head in the Tigers 4-1 loss to the Ice Bears, making a staggering 74 saves on 78 shots against, facing 27, 26, and 25 shots by period.

After a 0-0 first period the Ice Bears cracked the seal in the second period with two goals in 30 seconds by Addison Dahl and Emily Bill, both unassisted.

Four minutes later Stacey Cloute added another unassisted goal, before Bill's second (on a feed from Cloute) to make it 4-0 Ice Bears.

Black River Falls added a goal of their own in the waning minutes of the third period to make it 4-1. Zowie Hunter scored on a feed from Courtney Magnuson.

Ice Bear goalie Anna Byczek stopped 17-18, good for a .944 save percentage on the day.

The Ice Bears will move on to face the Stars in the second round, and the Tigers will face the Sabers.

The ice was tipped in favor of the Hayward co-op Hurricanes in the next game of the tournament as they rolled to a 9-2 win over the Rock County Fury, outshooting the Fury 43-14 in the process.

Reese Sheehan opened the scoring for the Hurricanes at 5:53 of the first period with a power play goal. Abby Salo added the Hurricane's second goal just 51 seconds later, and Sheehan added her second before the period was over.

The Hurricanes added three more in the second. First from Savannah Harris, and two from Riley Sprenger.

The Fury got on the board in the third period on a misplay by Hurricane goalie Makenna Hutchinson. It was credited to Ava Kligora. The Canes answered back with goals by Sprenger and Reese Duncan, before the Fury added their final goal on a nice effort by Emma Kligora.

Hutchinson had 12 saves in the win for the Canes. Jillian Traver had 34 saves for the Fury in the loss.

The final game of the first round was another goalie show as Evie Pritzl and Hailee Scheier combined to stop 62 of 63 shots in the Warbirds 1-0 win over the Eau Claire Area Stars.

The first period saw the ice tipped in the favor of the Warbirds who outshot the Stars 25-4 in the period. Sydriha Retzlaff scored the lone goal of the game with assists by Ella Getz and Josie Kooima.

The shot margin narrowed in the second period to 12-4 for the Warbirds, and narrowed further to 11-7 for the Warbirds in the third. But neither team was able to find the back of the net and the Warbirds took the 1-0 win.

Evie Pritzl stopped 47 of 48 shots in the loss for the Stars and Scheier stopped all 15 shots she faced in the win.

The Stars will play the Fury in the second round, and the Warbirds will face the Hurricanes.
