McElhenie makes 24 saves in extra period victory

Senior Hannah Juckett scored on a rebound just 45 seconds into overtime to lead the Badger Thunder past host Point-Rapids Red Panthers Tuesday evening at the Ice Hawks Arena in Stevens Point.

The first period was defense-minded, as neither team was able to score. The hosts outshot their foes 7-5 in the first period.

The Red Panthers got on the board first just 3:43 into the second period when Rachel Metz banged home a rebound off a Rachel Nolan shot. The sophomore forward scored her team-high fifth goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

That's how the period would end, with the Red Panthers continuing to hold the shot margin, this time by a tally of 12-8.

The Thunder scored to tie the contest early in the third period.

Lexi Kittle tucked a rebound between the post and Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla's right skate at the 5:38 mark to even the contest, with an assist to Allison Blada.

The Thunder had two power play chances and the Red Panthers had one opportunity late in the period, but no one was able to convert on the man advantage and the game moved on to overtime. The Thunder pummeled Bubla with 14 shots, while the Red Panthers managed only six shots on Thunder netminder Kelcie McElhenie in the stanza.

The fans hardly got settled into their seats as Juckett punched a rebound through Bubla's pads less than a minute into overtime. Rachel Pawlak and Taylor Urbanek were given assists on the game-winner.

McElhenie stopped 24 of 25 as the Thunder earned their first win in eight chances, while Bubla ended with 26 saves for the Red Panthers, who dropped to 2-5 on the young season.
