Spartans Mount Comeback for Victory

Superior's Makaela Reinke and Fusion's Kendall Sunby put on as show

The first regular season Wisconsin Prep Hockey Girl's Game of the Week was not without pregame excitement. The UW-Superior women's hockey game vs St. Olaf was being played first and ran a little long. The Fusion had to deal with some slow traffic due to a vehicle accident in their route. Once the game was underway between the St. Croix Valley Fusion and Superior Spartans it did not take long for the Fusion fans to get excited about the adventures on the ice.

The Fusion's Kendall Sundby gave her team the lead at 3:49 of the first with Alayna Brightbull and Oaklie Holldorf assisting on the goal. The Spartans picked up a tripping penalty at 10:17 of the period to put the Fusion on the power play. Nineteen seconds later Sundby picked up her second goal with an assist from Morgan Kivel and the Fusion led by 2. One of the Fusion players went down to the ice in the low slot with the assist of Spartan player which resulted in a roughing penalty and gave St. Croix Valley their second power play at 11:46 of the first period. The Fusion capitalized at 12:32 with the power play goal by Kivel and assisted by Sundby and Nathalie Rotsaert. The Fusion held a 3-0 lead. The Spartans cut the deficit to 2, when Grace Hansen scored with Indigo Fish and Emma Ferg assisting. The period ended with the Spartans trailing 3-1.

Makaele Reinke scored an unassisted goal at 4:14 of the second to bring Superior within 1. The Spartans tied the game, when Reinke and Rooke Lindberg assisted on Autumn Cooper's goal at 12:41. St. Croix was able to kill off two penalties in the period. The second period concluded with the game tied at 3.

Superior put the Fusion on the power play at 8:15 of the third period, when one of their defensemen picked up a checking penalty. The Spartans killed off the penalty to keep the game knotted at 3. The Fusion picked up a tripping penalty at 10:07 of the third. This time the Spartan's Reinke was able to find the back of the net with Gabryel Olson and Cooper assisting for Superior to take the lead at 11:41 of the third. Superior picked up a tripping penalty with 4:03 left in regulation, but Reinke forced a turnover, skated the length of the rink to score a shorthanded goal and put her team up by 2 at 13:11 of the third. 

The Spartans held to 5-3 win.
