Gazzolo tallies four points in winning effort

Myranda Hayes and Kelly Knetter each scored twice, while Kylie Gazzolo added a goal and three assists to lead the Central Wisconsin Storm past host Fondy/Waupun 7-1 in Wisconsin Prep Hockey's "Game of the Week" Saturday afternoon at the Fond du Lac Blue Line Ice Center.

The Storm got on the board first at the 3:06 mark when Emilee Mytinger banged in a rebound from the low right side for a short-handed goal. Megan Marlowe received an assist on the play.

Gazzolo made it 2-0 just over five minutes later when she scored on a shot that trickled off FDL/W goalie Taryn Immel's left pad and slid into the net at 8:48 of the period. Paige Sedlar earned a helper on the scoring play.

Hayes got into the act with just over two minutes left in the period. Her breakaway ended in a goal that sailed over the goalie's glove to make it 3-0 at the 14:32 mark, with an assist to Sedlar.

The period ended with that three-goal lead and a shot edge of 16-7 in the Storm's favor.

The Storm padded their lead to 5-0 with two goals in a span of just 47 seconds midway through the second period.

First, Hayes notched her second goal on a shot from the right dot that beat the goalie through the five hole with traffic in front of her at 6:18 of the second.

Then less than a minute later came the goal of the game.

After a Storm shot, the puck was laying in the slot just outside the crease when four players made concerted efforts to get to it. Sarah Poirier was the closest and ended up scoring while bodies crashed to the ice, filling the goal with two FDL/W players. Gazzolo and Hayes were both given assists on the play.

The teams exchanged power play chances late in the period, but neither team was able to score as the Storm took a 5-0 lead to the locker room for intermission number two, holding a narrow 8-6 shot edge.

Four minutes into the final period, the Storm put the game into run time.

Knetter notched her first goal with a nice re-direct of a shot from the point by Rachel Babiarz at the 3:58 mark. Gazzolo earned her playmaker with a secondary assist.

The Warbirds got on the board with just over six minutes left in the period when Katherine Nejedlo ripped a shot from the high slot that bounced off at least two sticks and had Storm goalie Kristine Fonti flailing wildly while trying to preserve her shutout. The goal, which came at 10:47, was a power play score with helpers to Katelin Polakoski and Shelby Sabel.

FDL/W coach John Nejedlo pulled his goalie with just over a minute to go, perhaps to shake things up, but then paid the price when Knetter scored her second with an empty-netter with one second left to play.

The Storm once again outshot the Warbirds, this time by a margin of 8-3.

Fonti stopped 15 shots for the win, while Immel had 25 saves in the contest for Fondy/Waupun.
