Second Round of the Girls Hockey Classic Tournament

In the second round of the Girls Hockey Classic Tournament at University School Friday, the University School co-op girls hockey team beat the Stoughton co-op 5-1.

The Wildcats outshot Stoughton 48-17 on their way to their second win in the tournament.

Neither team scored in the first period. USM scored the game's first goal on a power play early in the second period.  As the Wildcats moved the puck around the Stoughton zone, it went to Margot Peterson at the point.  She passed it to Laine Tomesch at the center of the blue line.  Tomesch then passed it to Megan Bailey in the low right circle.  Bailey shot it.  The rebound bounced into the right corner.  Bailey raced to get it, wheeled out front, and made sure on her next shot to give USM a 1-0 at 4:28.

The Wildcats scored again just under two minutes later.  Rebecca Hart intercepted a Stoughton pass in center ice and then fired a cross-ice diagonal pass to Laine Tomesch at the Stoughton blue line on the left side. Tomesch sped into the zone, pulled the puck around a defender like she was teasing a cat with a toy, and as she closed in on Stoughton's goalie Kenzie Torpy, she whipped a shot into the net at 6:23.

In another two minutes The Wildcats were ahead 3-0.  Abby Berman intercepted a Stoughton clearing pass near the blue line on the left side.  She moved down the boards, swerved into the near circle, and with the accuracy of a cell phone clock, she put the puck into the upper corner of the Stoughton net at 8:06.

Stoughton made it 3-1 at 11:02. After Torpy stopped a three-on-two play, the rebound went to Hannah Johnson in the Stoughton slot.  Johnson began to skate up ice and quickly head-manned the puck to Elizabeth Strassman in center ice.  Strassman skated in on a one-on-one and fired the puck past USM's goalkeeper Heidi Golembiewski to make the score 3-1.

Bailey scored USM's final two goals to earn herself a hat trick for the evening. Her second goal of the game came late in the second period.  Sally James gained control of the puck behind the Stoughton net. She skated toward the left corner and up the left boards.  She deftly reversed her path to avoid pursuing defenders, skated toward the net and centered a pass to Bailey, parked like a Ferrari revved up and ready in the slot.  Bailey top-shelfed the puck at 15:54.

Bailey got her third goal at 5:24 of the third period on a power play.  Defenseman Jessica Gold got the puck at the Stoughton blue line and sent a pass to Andersen in the lower left circle.  Andersen avoided a defender and then crossed the puck to Bailey in the far circle.  Bailey moved into the slot and drilled a shot past Torpy.

In the game Torpy made 43 saves and Golembiewski made 16 saves.

USM is now 5-2.  The Wildcats play their third game of the round robin tournament at USM at 3:00 p.m. Saturday against the Beloit co-op.
