Second-ranked Evergreens need extra period to edge Marshfield

Joe Patterson scored just eleven seconds into overtime to give second-ranked D.C. Everest a 4-3 win over the Marshfield Tigers Thursday evening at the Marshfield Youth Ice Center.

The Evergreens came into Marshfield with confidence, having beaten Green Bay United, USM, and Marquette in an eight-day span just a week before.

Call it over-confidence on the Evergreens part, or perhaps call it bulletin board material for the Tigers, but both teams came to play.

The early going saw lots of action but little scoring. It took nearly nine minutes for DCE to get on the board.

Colin Helke took a pass from Allan Sackmann and moved down the left side and took a shot from the circle that squirted off Tiger goalie Mac Alboreo's pad for a 1-0 lead at the 8:49 mark.

That score held until nearly the end of the period.

Cole Halligan scored from the slot with an assist to Luke Merchant at the 15:01 mark of the period, and that 2-0 score would be showing on the scoreboard as the teams went to their respective locker rooms at the first intermission.

(1st period shots: DCE 8, Mfld 4)

The Tigers came out for the second period fired up, and although that did not immediately translate into a score, they carried play throughout most of the period.

They cut the lead to 2-1 at 5:52 when Schuyler Seyfert tallied on a power play goal from the slot, beating DCE goalie Andy Mahler. Assists went to Austin Littmann and Bobby Leggon.

Each team had a power play chance late in the period, but neither squad could capitalize on the man-advantage.

(2nd period shots: Mfld 10, DCE 8)

Everest came out fired up to start the third and got a goal just 2:22 into the period. Nate Bruns scored from the top of the left circle with assists from Halligan and Patterson to increase the lead to 3-1.

It looked like the Evregreens would leave town with a two-goal win, but the Tigers took advantage of two power plays in the last 2:50 of regulation to tie the game.

First, Seyfert punched home a rebound from the low left side with assists to Littmann and Leggon to cut the lead to 3-2 at 14:10 of the period.

After a DCE penalty, Tiger coach Doug Steines pulled Alboreo for an extra attacker, in essence giving Marshfield a 6-on-4 power play. They took advantage of that situation when Zac Alboreo pounded home a rebound from the right side to tie the game with just eight seconds left in the period. That would send the contest to an extra period.

(3rd period shots: DCE 12, Mfld 5)

The Evergreens won the faceoff to start the overtime, with Halligan carrying the puck along the left wall. He found Patterson coming down the slot and fed him with a beautiful pass, resulting in a back-door goal that Alboreo had no chance on. An addditional assist went to Helke.

In the game, Mahler stopped 16 shots in procuring the victory for DCE, while a much busier Alboreo had 25 saves at the other end for Marshfield.
