Eileen Carey’s goal with 2:33 remaining, broke a 2-2 tie and led the Wisconsin Selects to an opening tournament 4-2 win over the Boston Wings. Carey, who watched from the penalty box late in the third period, returned to steal a puck just inside the Wing’s blue line, attacked down the left-wing dot and snapped the game winning goal over the shoulder of Wings goalie Summer Tallent. Tristan Wicklund tapped in an empty net goal two minutes later to seal the victory.

Ella Sciborski rebounded in net after allowing a goal on the games first shot to finish with 26 saves. The Wings took a 1-0 lead into the lockeroom after the first period. Sami Federici tied the game early in the second period after a nice play by Gab du Vair that sent Federici in alone down the right side. The senior sniped a goal under the cross bar to bring the Selects even at 1-1. The two teams headed to the third period tied.

A great individual effort by Shannon Dwyer gave the Selects their first lead of the game at 12:04 of the third period. Dwyer followed her own shot in to the net and knocked home the rebound giving the Selects a 2-1 lead. The Wings answered less than two minutes later when Jenna Chaplain jumped on a loose puck just below the left dot and beat Sciborski to tie the game. That set the stage for Carey.

The Selects rode a roller coaster playing well in stretches and struggling at times to effectively exit their defensive zone. Sciborski made a handful of big saves early in the third period, to keep the game tied. The penalty kill, led by Sciborski and the efforts of Logan Crawford, Shannon Dwyer, Dru Sabatke and Ella Chilson helped the Selects kill off five penalties including one with just over five minutes remaining. The Wings finished with a 26-25 shots on goal advantage.

Friday the Selects will play the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Griffins at 11am.
