The Hudson Raiders showed why they have been the number one ranked team in the state all year as the defending champions made short work of the University School of Milwaukee Wildcats 6-0 in the opening game of the Division One tournament on Friday morning.

The puck wasn’t in the Hudson zone very often or for very long. Hudson defensemen made the simple safe passes that got them out. Hudson goalie Aiden Tepper-Engh kept himself loose by working on his angles and moving to block imaginary shots while the puck was in the USM zone.

Hudson did everything in the first period but score. USM goalie Michael Polston was very busy but a perfect 16 for 16 on save attempts. At the other end, Tepper-Engh was only called upon to stop one shot, very late in the period.

Hudson was able to break the seal on the USM net at 2:45 in the second period. Carter Mears scored on a one-timer from the slot off a pass by Matthew Mauer from the corner.

Three minutes later the Raiders cashed in again with a power play goal, on a shot from the blue line by Max Giblin was that was redirected in the slot by Matthew Mauer.

Hudson scored their third goal on a 2 on 1 by Alex Pottratz and Carson Strappon. Pottratz carried the puck in along the left side and the right-hand shooter got himself into position to put one in the net off the bottom of the crossbar.

Polston recorded another 16 saves in the second period, and Tepper-Engh was initially credited with a save, but it was taken off the board as it was a shot on net during a delayed offsides, so it didn’t count.

The Raiders added three more goals in the third period. Max Giblin scored on a wrist shot from the high slot off a pass by Matthew Mauer. Harrison Ross scored from just outside the crease off a pass from below the goal line by Strappon. And finally, Brecken Meyer scored a power play goal on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Polston finished the game with a total of 45 saves for the game, and Tepper-Engh had but the one.
