Raiders Use Insane Third Period to Down Rochester

After two periods of Hudson's Hockey Fights Cancer game against Rochester Century I tweeted this, "Hudson leads Rochester Century 2-0 after two periods. Shots are 16-7. The game hasn't been as close as either of those numbers would make it seem."

Hudson then exploded for 7 goals in the third period en route to a 9-0 win, allowing just 10 shots on goal for the game.

After two other Hudson breakaways were foiled, Denman Rode came out of the box and got a long lead pass with a head of steam. She blew around the D and netted the goal to give Hudson the 1-0 lead.

In the second period Hattie Carr knocked in a rebound off an Averie Martin shot to make it 2-0. Then, as I mentioned above, Hudson exploded.

"In the locker room during the second intermission, I jokingly kicked a garbage can trying to express my frustration on our 'average' effort and performance during the first and second periods," said Raider coach Matt Szypura. "I got a laugh out of the team and they seemed to respond in the third period with 7 goals. Once we scored 1 or 2 goals in the third we started to finally get hungry for loose pucks and started to play with an edge."

That they did.

Carr picked up another goal. Aubrey Ross passed to Parker at the side of the net. Parker simply redirected the puck through her legs to Carr on the other side of the net and Carr buried it.

Carr picked up another goal a few second later for the hat trick.

Rode followed with her second goal, this time a slapper from the high slot to make it 5-0.

Rode picked up a hat trick of her own a few minutes later. Aubrey Ross passed to Bella Buth in front. Buth was tied up with the Rochester defense and couldn't get her stick to the puck so she kicked it over to Rode who buried it.

It was 2-0 entering the third period, and six minutes later it was running time.

Parker would burn the defense for a breakaway goal of her own to make it 7-0. Parker would hit a post a few minutes later, leaving Buth to knock in the rebound to make it 8-0. Parker would score again on the ensuing faceoff to make it 9-0.

Parker far and away leads the Raiders in scoring this season with 14 goals (the next closest is 7) and 21 points (the next closest is 13).

"Leah is a great hockey player and a great leader for us, but yes it is very important to start to establish more scoring depth going into playoffs," said Syzpura. "We need to create scoring chances and goals through hard work and execution of our systems. Lately we have seen more players start to contribute goals and we hope to keep improving our confidence in our scoring ability into the last stretch of the season and into section playoffs."

The hat trick for Rode brings her goal total on the season to seven, and Carr's hat trick brings her to 6. The Raiders will need those two to keep scoring as the season continues.

The win brings the Raiders up to just 9-10 on the season, but they are 6-1 in their section and in the Big Rivers conference with two wins over each of Chippewa Falls/Menomonie and Eau Claire Area, a win over Western Wisconsin (who they play again on Tuesday), and a season split with St Croix Valley. They are now 8-3 in Wisconsin.

"We feel confident of where we currently are in our section, but we also know that our section is never easy and every team plays us tough," said Syzpura. "Playoffs are different games and the regular season record doesn't carry much weight when it is win or go home in sections. We need to respect each team in our section as we know each team can beat us if we don't show up to compete. "
