Teams from the eastern side of Wisconsin defeated teams from the western side in three of the four games in the opening round of the Wisconsin Prep Hockey Girls Holliday Classic in Chippewa Falls Tuesday morning.

Bay Area vs. Black River Falls

The Bay Area Icebears scored three times in the first period and never looked back, downing the Black River Falls Tigers 7-1. Jordan Brady got things started with a shot from the top of the circle that beat Tigers goalie Sydney Magnuson. The Icebears went up 2-0 when Makayla Spejcher let loose a wrister while cutting across the slot. Sophie Boxer rounded out the scoring with a rebound from in close. Magnuson finished the period with 13 saves, while Barbora Hromádková stopped both shots she faced in the Icebears net.

Bay Area got another 16 shots in the second, and denied the Tigers any shots, but there was only one goal scored. That goal came on a power play with a back door pass to a wide open Spejcher.

The Icebears added three more goals in the third before Lexie Hagan got BRF on the board. Final saves were 40 for Magnuson and 6 for Hromádková.

Fox Cites Stars vs. Hayward Hurricanes

McKayla Zilisch scored once in each period to lead the Stars over the Canes 7-0. She started by scoring on a breakaway during a Stars power play. The only other goal in the first was an even strength breakawaygoals by Parker Beyer. Greta Woelber stopped 7 of 9 shots for the Canes, while Ella Sciborski stopped all four she faced for the Stars.

Fox Cities went up 3-0 after a brief scramble in front of the Canes net when Gwen Gillard found the loose puck and put it past Woelber. Zilisch and Beyer each added another goal and Julia Lindemann scored with 11 seconds left in the period, making the score 6-0 after two, and making the third period running time. Zilisch added her third with just under five minutes left to make it a 7-0 final. Saves were 23 for Woelber and 20 for Sciborski.

Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Sabers vs. Warbirds

The Sabers took a 2-0 lead into the third period but fell to the Warbirds by a final of 4-2.

Addison Buesgen knocked in a rebound to put CFM up 1-0 halfway through the first. That was all the scoring in the period, shots were 13-10 in favor of the Sabers.

The second period was scoreless for 16:59.6 seconds. Or there about. CFM managed to slip a shot just inside the left pipe just ahead of the buzzer, going up 2-0 over the Warbirds. Shots were 23-20 Warbirds.

A power play goal by Allison Warren pulled the Warbirds within 1 early in the third. Just minutes later a slap shot by Ella Spies from the point through traffic tied it up for the Warbirds. CFM goalie Kasandra Herr mishandled a shot by Josie Kooima and the Warbirds took a 3-2 lead 7 minutes into the third. Spies added an empty netter with five seconds left to make the final 4-2.

Eau Claire Area Stars vs. Rock County Fury

The Stars controlled play and out-shot the Fury 36-16 but needed a shootout to down the Fury 3-2.

Eau Claire Area got on the board first on  shot from the slot. Then Rock County tied it up at ones with a snapshot from the point. Minutes later, the Fury took a 2-1 lead with a short-handed goal. That was it for the first period scoring, with shots at 13-5 in favor of ECA.

The Stars td it up early in the second period, and then the goalies took over. There would be no more scoring in the second period. Followed by no scoring in the third period. Or the first 5 on 5 overtime. Or the second 3 on 3 overtime, even though each team generated several 2 on 1s and each had a breakaway denied.

The Stars got two shootout goals and the Fury came up empty, allowing ECA to advance to the winning bracket.
