Notre Dame Academy Hangs On, and Hayward/Spooner Takes Over

The D.C. Everest Evergreens have wins against Green Bay United, University School and Marquette already on the young season. With those wins they've vaulted from not-ranked last week, to second place on the latest Wisconsin Prep Hockey Top Ten as voted by the WiPH staff and Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association.

Notre Dame Academy retains the number one spot for the boys and everybody else from last week's rankings falls in line behind the Tritons and Evergreens.

On the girl's side, we've got a third week of rankings and a third number one.  The Hayward/Spooner Hurricanes knocked off the previous No. 1 ranked Eau Claire/Altoona Stars thanks it part to Sarah Miley, our girls player of the week.  Miley had 22 saves in the 2-0 shutout of the Stars to put Hayward/Spooner into the top spot.

As we move into the season's third week more teams are opening up conference play. It should be interesting.

Boys - Top Ten

No. 1

Schedule

The Tritons picked up wins over Ashwaubenon and Homestead last week and will take on Bay Port and Stoughton this week.

Chris Nell is the anchor for this team with a nearly 96% save percentage.  Brett Gruber leads the offense with 2.75 points per game.

No. 2

Schedule

Last week in the Top Ten I made a crack that Green Bay United's loss to DC Everest was surprising.  Well it isn't so surprising anymore as Everest also knocked off Top Ten opponenets University School and Marquette.

The Evergreens open Wiscosin Valley Conference play this week with games against Merrill and Marshfield.

No. 3

Schedule

Marquette looked poised to take over the number two spot on this week's rankings with wins over honorable mention Cedarburg and previous No. 2 Wausau West, but they were stimyed in their final game of the week to the tune of a 5-2 loss to DC Everest.

The Hilltoppers returned  a significant portion of last year's team including senior forward Joe Llaurado and junior goaltender Mike Roznik.

No. 4

Schedule

Eau Claire Memorial held steady at the No. 4 spot with a win over Chippewa Falls and a tie to the Superior Spartans. This isn't last year's Eau Claire Memeorial team, but that was one of the most dominating teams we've ever seen, so there is no shame in that.

The Old Abes still have one of the most potent offenses in the state, lead by junior defenseman Michael Kapla.

No. 5

Schedule

The Wildcats are 2-0 in Big Eight play with their wins over the Madison Eastside Lakers and Janesville.  They've got two more conference games this week in Sun Prairie and Madison Memorial before they host a non-conference tilt with Appleton United.

On offense Eddie Matsushima and Zach Jones are both averaging three points per game.

No. 6

Schedule

The defending state champion Warriors got off to a good start for the week with a 6-0 win over Chippewa falls but they followed with one-goal losses to Marquette and University School.

They'll look to avenge those losses against Stevens Point and Fond du Lac this week.  Tom Kilgore and Kyle Lee lead the team on offense, and know what it takes to win a championship. Look for the Warriors to get back to winning soon.

No. 7

Schedule

The Spartans opened the week with a 5-4 win over Rice Lake and followed with a 4-4 tie to Eau Claire Memorial.

This week Superior has two more games in Wisconsin against Menomonie and New Richmond before they had back into their Lake Superior Conference schedule in Minnesota.

No. 8

Schedule

The Green Bay United Gryphons opened the week with a 5-4 win over Homestead and followed with a 2-2 tie to Bay Port.

They'll take on De Pere and Stoughton this week. Hunter Routheau leads the Gryphons with 13 points, and Will Griswold is holding down a .937 save percentage.

No. 9

Schedule

Homestead got a good start on the week with a win over De Pere but followed it up with a couple of tough losses to Green Bay United and Notre Dame Academy.

It doesn't get any easier for the Highlanders this week as they open up with Marquette, and follow with Whitefish Bay. Jake Roeper, Peter Schmitz and Ryan Mezera are scoring like gang busters for the Highlanders, so their oppenents better watch out.

No. 10

Schedule

University School opened the week with a tough loss to the DC Everest Evergreens but they followed it up with a quality 4-3 win over the defening champion Wausau West Warriors.

This week they'll take on Arrowhead and Brookfield. Corey Roadhouse leads the USM offense, but the attack is very balanced overall.

Schedule

No. 1

It was a big week for the Hayward/Spooner Hurricanes with a 4-0 win over Superior and a 2-0 over the previous No. 1 Eau Claire/Altoona Stars.

They take on Medford this week, and will certainly work to string together another shutout.

Schedule

No. 2

The Stars had a good start to the week with a 3-2 win over the Northland Pines Eagles, but they followed with a shutout loss to the Hayward/Spooner Hurricanes to fall out of the top spot in the rankings.

They take on Onalaska this week and will have to contend with high powered forward Theresa Knutson.

Schedule

No. 3

The defending state champion Fusion knocked off Superior in their only game this week. Now they head into Minnesota for games with the St. Paul Blades and Red Wing.

Schedule

No. 4

The Storm started the week strong with a 5-0 win over Point/Rapids, but couldn't get past the Sun Prairie Co-Op on Friday, to the tune of a 3-2 loss.

They'll try to get back on track this week with Tomahawk and then they'll take on Fondy/Waupun in our Game of the Week.

Schedule

No. 5

Fondy/Waupun had a short week last week with just one game, but they knocked off Bay Area to keep pace with the other top teams in the state.

This week they take on Appleton United, and Central Wisconsin in our Wisconsin Prep Hockey game of the week.

Schedule

No. 6

The Cougars have had an up-and-down season so far. This week they picked up wins agains the Metro Lynx and Central Wisconsin, but lost to the Northland Pines Eagles.

Its a short week this week for the Cougars with one game against the Badger Thunder and some time to rest their legs before next week's action.

Schedule

No. 7

The Hilltoppers picked up a 4-1 win over the Middleton Metro Lynx in their only game this week. Sophomore Theresa Knutson is a scoring machine with 10 goals and seven assists in four games, good for 4.25 points per game.

The Hilltoppers have three games this week starting with Winona and moving on to Eau Claire/Altoona and WSFLG.

Schedule

No. 8

All in all it was a pretty good week for the Eagles with wins over Marshfield and the Sun Prairie Co-Op.  They took a 3-2 loss to last week's No.1 team, the Eau Claire/Altoona Stars.

The Eagles only have one game this week, against the Lakeland Thunderbirds.

Schedule

No. 9

Bay Area opened the week with a loss to Fondy/Waupun but followed with wins over Fox Cities and New Richmond to take the title at the Wisconsin River Classic (which you can hear more about in our This Week in Wisconsin Prep Hockey podcast).

This week features another game against Fox Cities for Bay Area. Given that the last one was 3-2, it should be a great game.

Schedule

No. 10

The Icebergs picked up wins over Beaver Dam/Randolf and Viroqua last week to grab the final spot in our top ten rankings.

This week sees them taking on Rock County, University School and Kettle Moraine.
