Roethlisberger scores late game-winner

In a game where the shot chart shows a 40-20 advantage, the team that fires the most pucks usually wins by a few goals.

That was not the case in the game between the Bay Area Ice Bears and the Fox Cities Stars. The Ice Bears doubled up on shots, but Fox Cities goalie Allie Gloudemans was up to task and stopped 37 of the 40 in a close 3-2 loss to Bay Area Saturday morning in the Wisconsin River Classic held at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Ice Bears controlled play for most of the first period, yet it was the Stars that got on the new scoreboard first at the SWC Rec Center, now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Stars forward Rian Lennon received the puck and scored from the high slot area, with an assist from Caiti Jansen at 9:05 of the first.

The Ice Bears would answer just 84 seconds later with a goal by Frankie Janssen from the left circle. The scoring play earned an assist for Allie Brunner.

The period ended with the tie intact, although the Ice Bears held a 16-7 shot advantage.

Fox Cities grabbed a 2-1 lead at the 4:26 mark when Nicole Barfknecht launched a shot from the left circle that beat Bay Area goalie Sarah Block high on the glove side. Mollie Patzke got the assist on the play.

Bay Area evened the contest at two while on the power play when Lauren Roethlisberger skated in from the right corner and flipped a nifty backhander past Gloudemans at 12:10 of the period.

Although the period ended with the scoreboard showing two for each team, the shots showed Bay Area with a 13-6 edge in the period.

In the final period, Roethlisberger added the game-winner to her already impressive resume when she zipped a puck on the ice from the high slot past the Stars netminder at 14:56, with an assist to Brunner, her second of the game.

The Stars pulled its goalie late in the game for the man advantage, but were unable to produce the tying score.

Block saved 18 shots in the win.
