Charland scores OT winner just 20 seconds in

Paige Charland scored just 20 seconds into overtime on a fluke goal to give the New Richmond Tigers a 3-2 win over host Point-Rapids Red Panthers Saturday afternoon in the Wisconsin River Classic tournament at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Tigers opened the scoring at the 6:08 mark of the first period when Siera Myer beat Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla from the low left to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, with the assist going to Emma Lepper.

That's how the period ended, with New Richmond holding a 10-3 shot edge.

In the second period, teams exchanged power play chances, but neither was able to score as the Tigers outshot their foes by a margin of 12-5.

The hosts evened the game at 2:34 into the third when freshman Brianne Huettner punched in a rebound for her third goal of the year off the initial shot by Rachel Metz.

The Tigers regained the lead when they took advantage of a power play five minutes later. Kaylee Bebeau knocked home a rebound to make it 2-1 at the 7:40 mark with her unassisted goal.

Not to be outdone, Metz skated down the middle, made a deke or two, and then slid the puck behind Tiger goalie Baily Lund at 10:20 to tie the game at two.

As the period ended, shots were even at nine, goals were even at two, and the squads took a three minute break before they would head to overtime.

The game would be over in less than 30 seconds.

The Tigers gained control of the puck deep in the Red Panthers defensive zone and an attempted centering pass bounced off a Red Panther defender and slid past Bubla, who was moving to face a potential shot from the slot. Charland was given credit for the unassisted goal.

In the game, Bubla stopped 29 of 32 shots, while Lund made 15 saves for New Richmond.
