There are those that say the two-goal lead is the worst lead in hockey. A team gets up by a pair of scores and then they relax. Before long, it is 2-1 and the trailing team has the momentum. Shortly after, the game is tied and the once leading team deflates like an old balloon.

So it went for the Point-Rapids Red Panthers, in search of their first win in four tries early in the 2011-12 season. The Red Panthers led by that 2-0 score just eight minutes into the game, but were unable to hold on, losing to Fox Cities 3-2 in overtime in the consolation game of the Wisconsin River Classic tournament held at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday.

The Red Panthers got on the board before many fans were even seated on the bleachers on the south side of the rink.

Nicole Hassig scored her first goal of the young season when she raced down the left side and loosed a shot that beat Stars goalie Allie Gloudemans on the stick side to give P-R a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the contest. Amanda Milanowski was credited with an assist on the play.

Just over seven minutes later, Rachel Metz knocked home her second goal of the year with a shot from the high slot area to give the Red Panthers that 2-0 lead. Hassig and Brianne Huettner were given assists on the score.

That's how the period would end, with the hosts holding a 11-7 shot edge.

The second period was all Fox Cities, as they scored twice in a span of less than three minutes late in the stanza to tie the contest.

First, star forward Rian Lennon skated from the neutral zone to the left circle and ripped a shot that seemingly disappeared. The officials blew their whistles and waited as Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla searched in her pads to find the wayward puck. Seconds later, the black rubber disk was found underneath the pad at the back of the net and a goal was awarded, with an assist to Liz Martin at the 10:58 mark.

Not satisfied trailing by one, the Stars went on the attack. Nicole Barfknecht got the puck at center ice and broke away from the pack. Her shot from the left circle found the back of the net at 13:39 to tie the game at two. Molly Donnellan and Stefanie Stumpf were credited with helpers on the game-tying score.

Shots were all even at seven apiece in the middle period.

The third period was a wild affair, with the whole period played 5-on-5 and a total of 26 shots on goal taken. Gloudemans stopped an amazing 17 while Bubla made nine saves on the other end to send the game to OT.

The Red Panthers killed off an early penalty before taking another at the 3:19 mark.

Lennon worked her magic less than a minute later when she gathered the puck and skated to the high slot. While crossing right to left, she snapped an on-ice shot that went through a forest of legs and slid past a surprised Bubla at 4:15 for the game-winner. Barfknecht got an assist on the play.

For the winners, Gloudemans stopped 35 shots in the game, while Bubla had 24 saves in the contest.
