Bay Area defeats New Richmond 3-0 in championship game

The Bay Area Ice Bears got two third period goals from star forward Lauren Roethlisberger to defeat the New Richmond Tigers 3-0 Saturday evening in the Wisconsin River Classic tournament held at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The first period was scoreless as the Ice Bears held a 10-5 shot lead in the period.

Courtney Wittig got Bay Area on the board just 1:10 into the second when her shot from the left circle beat Tiger goalie Baily Lund low on the stick side. Frankie Janssen earned an assist on the play.

There was no scoring for the duration of the period, and Bay Area retired to the locker room with a 1-0 lead while being outshot 6-5 in the period.

Roethlisberger took advantage of a power play and scored at the 2:51 mark of the third, with helpers from Janssen and Wittig to make it 2-0 in favor of Bay Area.

Less than five minutes later, Roethlisberger grabbed a loose puck at the point, skated a few strides and rifled a shot on the ice past the NR netminder to give the Ice Bears a 3-0 lead at 7:43 that would hold up for the rest of the game. The Tigers held a slight 7-6 shot edge, but were unable to solve Bay Area's Sarah Block, who finished with 18 saves.

Lund stopped 18 shots for the Tigers.
