The Evergreens out skated, out shot, and out hustled USM on their way to the victory

The DC Everest hockey team traveled from Wausau to play the University School boys team at USM Friday night. The trip was worth it for the Evergreens.  They shutout USM 4-0.

The Evergreens out skated, out shot, and out hustled USM on their way to the victory.  DC Everest took 31 shots and limited the Wildcats to a mere 12 shots in the entire game.

Everest scored its first goal midway through the first period.  Taking a loose puck in center ice, Alex Yde raced into the USM along the left boards while Brandon Dively out hustled a USM back checker down the middle.  As Dively skated into the low slot, Yde centered the puck to him.  Dively touched the puck toward the USM net, and it slid in, just inside the right post, at 8:30.

USM's sophomore goaltender Brian Botcher turned aside 13 other shots in the period to keep USM in the game, but Everest's efforts in the second period made it difficult for the Wildcats to stay in contention.

Dively and Yde combined again to score DC Everest's second goal just 46 seconds into the second period. Dively got the puck along the boards in the Evergreens' end.  He lined a stretch pass to Yde who had dashed unimpeded behind the USM defense into center ice.  Yde skated in on a breakaway, deked Botcher, and snapped the puck between the goaltender's legs.

The Evergreens continued their onslaught and notched another goal late in the period. In the USM zone, Joe Patterson sent a pass to defenseman Luke Merchant at the point.  Merchant blasted a high shot through a screen past Botcher into the upper corner of the net at 13:56.

In the third period the Wildcats finally played hockey that was more in keeping with the USM tradition of hockey excellence. Unfortunately penalties kept them on the defensive for a large portion of the final period.  The Wildcats killed five of the six penalties assessed against them in the period, but surrendered one goal while two men down.  While the Evergreens moved the puck around the USM end, it went to Dively behind the net.  He centered a pass to Eli Jasurda in the slot and Jasurda one-timed it in at 12:11.

In the game Botcher made 28 saves, while Everest's Andy Mahler recorded the shutout by stopping all 12 of the shots the Wildcats took on net.

DC Everest is now 2-0. The Evergreens continue their Milwaukee trip with a game against Marquette Saturday. USM's record slipped to 1-4 with the loss. The Wildcats host Wausau West in a game at 4:00 on Saturday.
