Big First Period Lifts Wildcats

The first “Game of the Week” for Girls’ Hockey on WiPH featured an Eastern Shores Conference match-up between the Arrowhead Warhawks and the University School of Milwaukee Co-op Wildcats.  As I was headed to Milwaukee, I was looking forward to seeing the two teams play knowing it was a rivalry game on top of being a conference match-up.

The game started out with a fast pace and saw Arrowhead open the scoring at the 4:05 mark of the first period.  Makenna Thomas notched the first goal of the game with Courtney Krueger and Rachel Martell being credited with the assists.

The Wildcats were not going to shown up on their home ice and responded with Sally James assisting on a goal by Megan Bailey to tie the game at 6:20 of the first period.   Forty-nine seconds later, Abby Berman gave USM the lead with an assist from Margot Peterson.

Arrowhead picked up a penalty and eight seconds later picked up a second penalty giving the Wildcats a 5-on-3 opportunity.  It appeared the Warhawks may escape and kill off both penalties, but with 2 seconds remaining on the second penalty USM capitalized.  Nina Anderson converted the power play goal with assists being credited to Megan Bailey and Billie Fritz giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

USM was called for a penalty two seconds after their last goal and the Warhawks made them pay scoring with 54 seconds left on the penalty.  Courtney Krueger cut the lead to one on a power play goal with Shelby O’Connor and Jamie Musbach assisting on the play.

Rose Revolinski completed the scoring in the first period with an assist from Liz Curley.  The score at the end of the first period found USM leading 4-2.

The Wildcats bumped their lead to three with a Megan Bailey connecting on her second goal of the night (unassisted).  The Warhawks picked up another penalty with 7:22 remaining in the third period.  While working on the penalty kill, Arrowhead’s Alex Beversdorf found Makenna Thomas in the neutral zone.  Thomas skated in and converted the short-handed goal to complete the scoring in the contest.

Arrowhead’s Hanna Nicholson finished the game with 22 saves and Heidi Golembiewski had 16 saves for USM.
