10th ranked Appleton United wins season opener

Anna Westmark and Katie Trucco each scored a pair of goals to lead Appleton United to a 6-2 victory over the Point-Rapids Red Panthers Monday evening at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

The two squads went up and down the ice the first few moments of the contest without scoring until Jennifer Cramer grabbed a pass from Juuli Spelman and knocked a bouncing puck past Red Panthers freshman goalie Emily Bubla at 4:51 to put up an early 1-0 lead.

The lead stayed that way until very late in the period. Each team had 5-on-3 power plays in the middle of the stanza but were unable to capitalize. With just a few seconds left in the period, Trucco grabbed a loose puck just outside the zone--P/R parents were screaming for offsides--and skated to the slot and sniped a shot off the right post and past Bubla for a 2-0 AU lead with just four seconds left in the period.

The period would end with AU holding a 13-5 shot edge.

United built their lead to 3-0 just under four minutes into the second period when Jenny Miller's shot on the ice from the outside edge of the left circle snuck through traffic and past the Red Panther netminder.

Point-Rapids cut the lead to 3-1 when freshman Brianne Huettner grabbed a rebound in the slot and beat AU sophomore goalie Libbey Breaker on the glove side at 5:32 of the period. Rachel Metz was credited with an assist for P/R.

Westmark scored her first goal at 11:03 of the second when she went coast to coast down the right side, cut across the slot and ripped a shot that beat Bubla high on the glove side to expand the lead to 4-1.

A minute later, the Red Panthers' Huettner scored her second goal on a rebound that snuck past a sprawled Breaker to cut the lead to 4-2. The power play goal was unassisted.

Not to be outdone, Westmark scored her second goal when she stuffed in a rebound at the 12:26 mark to pad the lead to 5-2. Molly McKeever earned a helper on the play.

United had a huge 21-8 shot advantage in the period.

Trucco notched her second score at 4:05 of the third for United to account for the final tally.

The final period showed AU with a 9-3 shot advantage.

In the game, Breaker of United stopped 14 of 16 in a winning effort, while Bubla--in her high school debut--made 37 saves on the evening for the Red Panthers.

Appleton United will face Onalaska Friday at 5:00pm in the Viroqua tournament while Point-Rapids will not see their season get any easier, facing top-ranked Central Wisconsin Storm next Tuesday at 7:00pm in Wausau.
