(WAUSAU, WI) All 125 Wisconsin boys’ and girls’ high school hockey teams and their fans are invited to compete in the Hockey Against Hunger fundraiser for The Salvation Army.

Teams will battle in an online Red Kettle competition with the top three teams awarded cash prizes to use toward their teams’ end-of-season banquets. A $1000 first prize, $750 second prize and $500 third prize are all sponsored by Ministry Health Care. The Hockey Against Hunger fundraiser competition, approved by the WIAA, runs now through January 31, 2012.

Hockey Against Hunger got its start in 2008 in the Central Wisconsin high school hockey community and has raised over $31,000 since its inception. Their goal is to help those in need in communities across Wisconsin through the support of high school athletes trying to make a difference.

The Salvation Army, established in 1865, has been supporting those in need without discrimination for more than 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar spent is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
