Four power play goals help Crusaders win 7-2

After a slow start to their season, the Madison Edgewood Crusaders are on a roll. Thursday night they rolled over the tough Fond du Lac Springs Ledgers 7-2 at the FdL Blue Line Family Ice Center.

The Crusaders lost their first four games and five of their first seven to begin the abbreviated 2020-21 high school hockey season. They haven’t lost since, knocking off the top rated D1 team from Hudson along the way, and now the top rated D2 squad.

“Our top line and power play have been leading the way for the most part,” said coach Pete Rothering. “JJ (Wiebusch, January 4th Player of the Week) is a big part of that. He had another great night last night. Really skilled player, has gotten much stronger in his own end and is dangerous every time the puck is on his stick.”

Wiebusch assisted on the only goal scored in the first period, a power play goal scored by Aiden Lenz at 11:30. Wienbusch had a hand in all of Edgewood’s scoring, with a pair of goals to go along with five assists. “JJ, Cody (Menzel) and Aidan are a pretty strong line and Parker (Murn) leads the way on the blue line and on top of the power play,” said Rothering.

The Ledgers tied the game just 23 seconds into the second period, with a goal by Dayne Deanovich. But Murn, Wiebusch and Menzel combined for three more goals for the Crusaders. At the end of the second period, Edgewood was up 4-1 despite being out-shot 14-6.

Menzel scored just 20 seconds into the third period, which prompted the Ledgers to replace Hayden Rising with Brenden Gaertig in net. Rising finished the night allowing 5 goals on 9 shots, and Gaertig allowed a pair of late 5 on 3 power play goals to round out the scoring.

At the other end of the ice, Zach Walker (January 11th Player of the Week) gave up 2 goals on a total of 35 shots. Rothering added, “Walker has been really good in goal the last month. We didn't out-shoot Hudson or Springs and they had more zone time and possession, so we've got some room to go but we're doing some important things pretty well right now.”
