5 goal first period enough in win

  The Janesville Bluebirds on Saturday were playing their fourth game, third in as many days when they hosted the McFarland Spartans on Saturday.

  The Spartans who got a late start to the season due to covid restrictions, were playing only their second game of the season with a roster of 10 Freshman.

  The experienced Janesville team scored 5 goals in the first period, and cruised to a 6-2 non conference win.

  Janesville outshot the Spartans 17-0 in the first period. The scoring was started by Lucas Young on the power play on a shot with a screen in front of McFarland goalie Ray Wheaten.  Four other Bluebirds would follow in the scoring giving Janesville a 5-0 lead after 1 period.

  The Spartans to their credit came out in the second period with more pace to their game getting 9 shots in the period to Janesville's 14, but neither team scored.

  McFarland did get get their first goal of the game in the third period. Aidan Gabrielse was able to sneak a puck thru the side of Janesville goalie Cody Kaas for a 5-1 deficit. The Spartans however lost any momentum of that goal 13 seconds later when Lucas Vogt scored his second goal of the game for a 6-1 third period lead. The Spartans were able to get one more goal on the power play, another by Aidan Gabrielse for the final score of 6-2.

  Janesville saw their season record improve to 2-11. In the game Cody Kaas made 16 saves in the win. Another busy week awaits them with a home game against Oregon on Tuesday.

  McFarland who improved as the game went on, goes to 1-1 on the season. Ray Wheaten had a busy game in net with 32 saves. The Spartans stay on the road and face Monroe on Wednesday.
