Madison U18 Elite, winners of nine straight games after a 0-3-1 start, bumped previously unbeaten Northeast Elite 4-1 in the Championship game to take the WEHL U18 Central Challenge title at the Cornerstone Community Center the weekend of October 28-30.
In a story that is part Cinderella and part true high school hockey, goalie Dylan Kurbel of Middleton--initially listed as an alternate--joined the team as a regular after his team's 0-3-1 start and backstopped the squad's final eight games to finish 8-0 in WEHL play.
The same Northeast team that dropped the title game had thrashed Madison 10-1 & 8-1 during the regular season.
In an interesting side note, Kurbel's sister is battling for the starting netminder spot for the Metro Lynx girls' high school team.
