Madison area team moves on to finals

The Metro Lynx scored three times in the first period and held on for a 5-2 victory over the Rock County Fury Thursday evening in State Tournament semi-finals.

Ava Jambor punched in a rebound less than two minutes in to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead, with Kaya Pelton-Byce earning an assist.

After a penalty on each team a couple minutes later and the teams skating 4-on-4, Grace Bonnell picked up the loose puck at center ice, skated down the right side and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Fury goalie Olivia Cronin to make it 2-0.

With time winding down below two minutes left in the period, Rachel Mirwald found open ice on another 4-on-4, speeding down the right side and zipped a shot from the right dot for a 3-0 lead, with Josie Dragoo getting a helper on the play.

Lynx goalie Addie Armstrong stopped 14 shots in the period, while Cronin made seven saves.

The second period started with three penalties, but neither team took advantage of it until the Fury got on the board with just over six minutes left in the period.

Alyssa Knauf scored while diving for a rebound in the slot, flipping the puck over Armstrong's shoulder to make it 3-1.

But as often happens, the momentum got snuffed out when the Lynx's Hannah Kolpien skated from the wall to the slot and launched a shot that beat the goalie to make it 4-1 with 23 seconds remaining.

Armstrong had nine saves, while Cronin made three saves.

The game stayed at 4-1 for most of the period until Anika Einbeck won a race to a loose puck and sent the puck past the Lynx goalie to cut the lead to 4-2 with 4:33 left.

Mirwald scored her second goal with 1:26 left and assist to Pelton-Byce to make it 5-2.

Cronin came off with 1:20 left for the extra attacker but the Fury were unable to score and the game finished 5-2.

Armstrong stopped five shots for a game total of 28, while Cronin stopped four shots to end with 14.

The Fury finished the year with a fine mark of 18-9. The Lynx (21-3) will move on to the championship game at noon on Saturday.
