Wildcats Ride Third Period to State

Game swings on first 63 seconds of third

 Madison Ice Arena played host for the Sectional Three final game between #2 Madison Edgewood and #1 Verona. Parking outside was a challenge, while the stands were full and fans were standing around the glass to take in the game.

The game started at a fast pace and the fans were excited on both sides. Madison Edgewood broke into the score column first, when JJ Weibusch assisted on Cody Menzel at 3:11 of the period. Verona tied the game on a goal by Cale Rufenacht with an assist from Leo Renlund with 7:02 remaining in the first. The period came to an end with the game tied at 1.

The second period turned into a penalty fest. Fifty-six seconds into the period, Verona goaltender Kaden Grant was called for interference putting the Crusaders on the power play. Edgewood took advantage,when Aidan Lenz scored an unassisted power play goal with 14:13 showing on the clock. JJ Weibusch picked up at cross-checking penalty at 8:37 putting the Wildcats on the power play. Verona's Walker Haessig converted the power play goal 27 seconds later with Cale Rufenacht and Josh Osting assisting. Both teams picked up a few more penalties in the period, but the period came to an end with the game tied at 2.

The third period started with both teams having players in the penalty box. The first sixty-three seconds were devastating to the Crusaders as the Wildcats would score two goals in that span. Fourteen seconds into the period Rufenacht scored with Nathan Jurrens and Walker Haessing assisting. The Wildcat lead climbed to 2, when Haessing assisted on Rufenacht's third goal of the night with 15:57 remaining in regulation. Nathan Jurrens scored an unassisted goal at 5:56 of the third to complete the scoring. The Wildcats advanced to the state semi-finals with a 5-2 win over the Crusaders.
