Bonnell Seals the Deal

Metro Lynx Claim Rubber Match

The third meeting of the season between the Cap City Cougars and the Metro Lynx was not only the rubber match, but had a trip to the Alliant Energy Center tied to the win. The teams had each held serve on their home ice during the regular season. This game was on the Cougars home ice, but the Lynx were the home team.

The game included a total of 12 penalties, 7 on the Metro Lynx and 5 on Cap City. The first goal of the game came at 12:38 of the first period. The Lynx were applying pressure on Lexi Holman. The puck made its way back to the blue line where Grace Bonnell took the shot on goal. The puck found its way through a crowd and slipped under a screened Holman giving the Lynx a 1-0 lead. The Lynx's Mia Goetzke was credited with the assist.

A little halfway through the second period Cap City found themselves trying to kill off their fifth penalty of the game. The Lynx were using their speed to wear down the Cougars. Jinelle Siergiej finalist, Sydney Raaths scored a power play goal with an assist from Mia Goetzke at 11:12 of the period. The score was 2-0 Lynx at the end of two.

The third period found the Cougars trying desperately to cut into the lead and the Lynx killing off penalties. Late in the period the weariness was becoming evident in the facial expressions of both teams. Cap City pulled their goalie, Lexi Holman, with 2:17 remaining in regulation. Grace Bonnell sealed the deal with an empty net goal at 15:06 of the third period.

Both teams had a great season, but the heartbreak of the playoffs is win or go home. The Lynx earned their place as one of the final four moving on to the state semi-finals on Thursday, March 5, at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Madison.
