Davis makes 47 saves in tough loss

If the Notre Dame Tritons never see Beaver Dam goalie Kirk Davis again, it will be too soon. The junior goalie stopped 47 of 49 shots before falling to NDA 2-0 in the D1 Section Two final Friday night in Fond du Lac.

The Golden Beavers came out and played a very physical game, causing the Tritons to reciprocate. In the scoreless first period, Notre Dame had a five-minute major and two minors, while Beaver Dam took a pair of minors in the rough period. No goals were scored and Davis stopped 20 shots, while NDA goalie Bo Buckley made 11 stops.

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead late in the second on Riley Onell's shot from the right side at the 12:42 mark.

The period ended as Davis had 16 saves, with Buckley notching just two.

The contest was in the balance as neither team could score in the third and the clock ticked down to 2:00 left. Nine seconds later, a crucial penalty on Beaver Dam gave the Tritons a power play chance.

Callan Budinger's roof shot from close in with 1:15 left made it 2-0, NDA. Sawyer Scholl and Josh DeLange earned helpers on the late-game goal.

Buckley stopped three shots in earning the 16 save shutout. Davis continued his outstanding late season run of clutch netminding, stopping 11 pucks in the final stanza.

Beaver Dam ends the year with a mark of 18-8-2.

Notre Dame (24-1-1) will make its seventh trip to Madison and begins semi-final play Friday morning, seed yet to be determined, although a #1 seed is likely.
