Springs grab D2 Section 4 state bid

Brady Welsch scored twice and added two assists, and on the defensive side, goalie Hayden Rising stopped all 26 shots fired at him as Fond du Lac Springs shut out Waupun 6-0 Friday evening in D2 S4 play at Fond du Lac Blue Line Ice Center.

Springs scored three times in the opening period while gaining control of the game.

Four minutes into the first period, Levi Poss grabbed a rebound to the right of Waupun goalie Tyler Fromolz and tapped it in for the 1-0 lead, with assists going to Dayne Deanovich and Connor McLaughlin.

Six minutes later, Springs took advantage of a turnover in the Waupun D zone. Welsch grabbed a pass in the slot and skated toward the right circle and when he saw an opening, fired a shot that snuck between the left goalie pad and the post to make it a two-goal lead. Calvin Grass had an assist on the play.

Then came the bane of all hockey teams: the last-minute goal.

Mitch Huettl took a pass from Welsch and scored from the low right side with just 29 seconds left to make it 3-0, which is how the period ended.

Rising stopped eight shots in the frame, while Fromolz made 11 saves on his end.

Springs (22-3-2) tallied twice on power plays in a span of two minutes in the middle of the period to put the game out of reach.

At the 5:34 mark, McLaughlin's rocket from the right point clipped the right post and went into the net for a 4-0 lead. Huettl and Welsch earned helpers on the play.

Welsch converted on a back-door pass two minutes later to increase the margin to 5-0, with McLaughlin and Noah Pickart marked down for assists on the scoresheet.

Each team failed to convert a pair of power play chances in the last half of the period, which ended 5-0.

Rising made six saves, while Fromolz stopped 13 shots in the period.

WiPH Game Summaries

Max VandeSlunt made the score 6-0 just 40 seconds into the final period with his shot from the slot that beat the Waupun goalie on the blocker side. Poss and Deanovich got assists on the final scoring play.

Waupun outshot the Ledgers in the period 12-5, but Rising was determined to keep the 'zero' on the scoreboard and did so with 12 saves. Fromolz made four saves for a game total of 28.

The Warriors finished the year with a fine mark of 19-7-2.

Fondy Springs will most likely be seeded #1 for state, and if so, play in the 10am game on Thursday next week in Madison.
