Tight Battle Leads to Cheavers Advance

Cheesemakers Make Cheavers work until final horn

The Cheavers and Cheesemakers met in Reedsburg and played for the right to meet the Crusaders on Thursday evening. The game was expected to be tight and no one was disappointed.

The first period found both teams advancing the puck, but both defenses were limiting the shots on their respective goaltenders. The first period was coming to a conclusion, when Ben Fish took a shot from just inside the blue line. The puck managed to fly through a crowd and slipped past Heath Bear to give the Cheavers a 1-0 lead with 23.2 seconds remaining in the period.

Both teams continued battling throughout the second period. The Cheesemakers appeared ready to tie the game, when a rebound from Oakes slid over in front of an wide open net. Payton Stauffacher was taking the shot, but a Cheavers' defender got a stick in front and deflected the puck up into the netting. The period ended with the RWD still leading 1-0.

The third found two teams still trying to out do the other to move on in the playoffs. Monroe pulled their goalie late in the third and brought in the extra attacker. The Cheesemakers applied the offensive pressure, but they were unable to tie the game.

The Cheesemakers had a excellent season and their record doesn't show how well they played. The Monroe area has some life in their hockey program and will look to build on it next season.

RWD moves on to play Madison Edgewood on Thursday in Madison. They are looking to catch lightning in a bottle and hope to ride the storm to the next round.
