Lynx earn share of Badger Conference title

The Metro Lynx traveled up to Fond du Lac for their last game of the season. The Fond du Lac Cardinals started strong and had the Lynx frustrated for several shifts. Finally, at the 6:03 mark, Lynx forward Rachel Mirwald would give a board pass to Sydney Raaths who would go top shelf glove side to make it 1-0.

In the first, goaltender Hailee Sheier of Fondy stopped 6 of 7 shots and Lynx goalie Camryn McKersie stopped all 7 sent her way.

In the second, the Lynx would increase the pressure and put two more in. First would be Kaya Byce ripping a high shot blocker side with assists to Abby Ahlborn and Sam Olander.

Next it would be Abby Ahlborn’s turn. After a shot to the net, she would pick up the loose puck and put a backhander in to make it 3-0 with an assist to Byce.

The Lynx had several more opportunities but could not get one past a determined Scheier.

Fondy would have opportunities of their own. They had two breakaways in the second. The first one would see their forward catch the Lynx defenders standing still and walk in all alone but McKersie would deny the chance. Next, Hattie Verstegen, would pick up a puck, fly past one Lynx defender at the near blueline and drive hard down the left wall. As she approached the last Lynx defenseman, she would fake to the outside, heel toe the puck to the inside and walk in all alone. She would fake left, pull it to the right and slide a puck through for a Cardinals goal. The period would end 3-1 Lynx.

In the third, the Lynx would strike again. With the Cardinals on the power play, Sydney Raaths would create a turnover at the blue line and go in on a breakaway. She would snap a shot high glove side making it 4-1.

A determined Cardinals team would keep battling. On the same power play they would set up a play sliding the puck back door for a one timer that would be turned aside.

Their best late chance came when Verstegan would drive down the wall and past the Lynx defenseman. She would cut hard to the slot just below the hash marks and find no one between her and the net. She pulled the puck hard to the left and let go a quick shot that McKersie deflected to the corner.

The final would be 4-1 with Scheier making 22 saves and McKersie 18.
