Cronin earns shutout with 38 save effort in 1-0 win

The February 13 game in Sun Prairie between Rock County Fury and Cap City Cougars had big implications. The Fury went into the game behind the Cougars who were #1 in the Badger Conference in points.

The first period was a back and forth battle with the Cougars ahead in shots on goal as the period ended scoreless.

The Cougars graciously recognized the Fury seniors in the starting line-up and during their senior night ceremonies. Each Fury senior received flowers from the opposing team before the Cougars continued honoring each of their seniors. Each team retreated to their respective locker rooms to regroup.

The Cougars committed the first penalty with the Fury following suit 46 seconds later resulting in 4 on 4 play. The Fury capitalized when Alyssa Knauf made a pass up ice to connect with Anika Einbeck. Einbeck went around a defender and shot the puck bar down giving the Fury a 1-0 lead mid-way into the second period.

Each team went to the box for coincidental penalties. Tensions remained high throughout the period with the Fury retaining their 1-0 lead.

Both teams brought intensity into the third period. The Cougars had body checking and tripping penalties which they killed off. The Fury, too, killed off a penalty for too many players. The penalties were over with 7:40 left in the game.

It was a battle for each team to try to score. The Cougars pulled goaltender Lexi Holman and added an extra attacker with one minute remaining in the game. The Fury did an excellent job fending off the 6 on 5 for what seemed like an eternity for the spectators.

The Fury were victorious with the 1-0 win, as netminder Olivia Cronin was stellar in net, saving all 38 shots she faced, earning her 4th shutout of the season.

The Fury next face Viroqua while the Cougars take on Beaver Dam on February 15. If both the Fury and Cougars are victorious, there will be a three-way tie for the Badger Conference championship.
