The sniper's two goals pave way for 3-1 win

The Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Sabers made the trip to Antigo on Thursday night to face the Northern Edge having won four of their last five games. The Edge had won eight in a row before falling to Bay Area on Monday. A pair of well-placed shots by Sidney Polzin helped the Sabers to a 3-1 win.

The first couple minutes of the first period were spent in the Sabers zone before the ice tilted in favor of CFM. Sabers goalie Caroline O’Dell only had to make four saves in the scoreless first period, while at the other end, Alicia Turunen was kept busy facing 14 shots.

Midway through the second period a Saber and an Edge skater were racing for a loose puck when they made contact. The Sabers skater fell to the ice, so a penalty had to be called on the player still standing. Such is the state of officiating in far too many girls hockey games.

On the ensuing power play Polzin skated into the high slot and fired a wrist shot that just clipped the underside of the cross bar for the first goal of the game. Ella Ausman and Emelia Bergh assisted on the play.

That was the only scoring in the second. O’Dell stopped all five shots she faced in the period, while Turunen stopped 13.

Early in the third period Polzin unleashed another laser over Turunen’s shoulder and just under the crossbar to expand the Sabers’ lead to 2-0. Abigail Martin and Kaitlyn Buckli assisted on that goal.

The Edge finally got on the board with just 28 seconds left in the game when Madi Losch scored on a shot from the blue line that deflected off of a Sabers defender on its way to the net. Wyndi Saari and Emily Kassler assisted.

Just 13 seconds later CFM sealed the game with an empty net goal from Bergh.

O’Dell stopped 18 of 19 shots for the game. Turunen stopped 39 of 41.
