Lynx outshoot Blackhawks 49-7

The Metro Lynx had a huge shot edge and defeated Viroqua 3-1 Thursday at the Viroqua Community Arena.

Viroqua came out hard and took the play to the Lynx in the first few minutes. They pressed the play and were able to generate two point blank shots that were turned away by Lynx goaltender Camryn McKersie.

They fired off two more and finally converted. Rachel Simonson picked up a puck in her end and drove one on one with the Lynx defender. Skating into the zone, she lifted a shot from the dot that beat McKersie over the glove and the Blackhawks grabbed a quick lead just 2:33 into the game.

That goal seemed to spark the Lynx as just 19 seconds later, Sydney Raaths would get a pass from Ally Jacobsen, slice through the neutral zone, splitting defenders and walking in all alone on Blackhawks' goaltender Abby Severson. Raaths would fire a shot over Severson’s shoulder to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lynx would carry much of the play for the rest of the period but could not get another puck in the net. Saves for the period were four for McKersie and 17 for Severson.

The second period saw the Lynx having good puck possession and generating another 13 shots but again were turned aside by Severson.

The third period would see the Lynx come out hard and fire shot after shot but just couldn’t corral loose pucks. They put another 17 shots on net and were finally able to break the tie with 4:15 left in the game.

Lynx defenseman Ally Jacobsen would get a pass from Maddy Ahlborn and fire a quick shot on net. Severson would make the initial save but the rebound dropped to the left side of her where Kaya Byce was waiting to tap it in and make it 2-1.

The Blackhawks would make a push. The Lynx were called for a 5 minute major with 3:11 left in the game. They were able to control much of the puck possession and kept firing the puck down the ice. With 1:30 left, the Blackhawks would pull the goalie for the extra attacker. But a quick transition pass from Grace Bonnell would spring Sydney Raaths loose. She would cut across the the Blackhawks defending zone and would put the game away making it 3-1.

Severson would finish with 46 saves and McKersie with 6.
