Rock County wins fifth straight

The Madison Metro Lynx hosted a rematch with the Rock County Fury on February 1. The first time out the Lynx squeaked by with a 4-3 win in OT. Going into the game the Lynx and Fury were tied for second in conference points.

Both teams came out of the gate with full speed. The first goal of the game came from the Lynx as Sydney Raaths fired a quick hard shot past Fury’s Olivia Cronin just minutes into the first period. The Fury did not let that deter them from continuing to play hard. They kept up with the fast paced game and the first period ended 1-0 Lynx.

The Fury killed off a couple penalties in the first half of the second period while the Lynx killed off one of their own. In a scramble around the Lynx goalie, Claudia Boehlke took a shot and Sara Loerke capitalized on the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

Near the end of the second period, the Lynx got the go ahead goal from defenseman Ally Jacobson, assisted by Hannah Kolpien and Sam Olander. The second period ended with Lynx leading 2-1.

Both teams came out with intense and fast play in the third period looking for the conference win. Six minutes elapsed when the Fury sprang into action. Alyssa Knauf lit the lamp with great passes by Anika Einbeck and Haley Knauf to tie the game 2-2.

The Lynx checked a Fury player and gave the Fury’s power play unit an opportunity. It only took 10 seconds for the Fury to score. With more great passing, Anika Einbeck hit the puck cross ice. With no hesitation, Sara Loerke teed up from the circle and put the puck away giving the Fury a 3-2 lead.

With one minute left in the game, the Fury found themselves on a penalty kill. The Lynx pulled goalie Addy Armstrong and added an extra attacker. The Fury’s penalty killers held off every Lynx attempt to score.

The Fury defeated Lynx 3-2, keeping the Fury’s hopes of repeat conference champs alive. This marked the Lynx’s third loss of the season.

Goaltender Olivia Cronin was outstanding in net for the Fury making great saves of the 31 shots she faced. The Fury put up 28 shots on Armstrong.

Winning five straight games, the Fury hope to continue that streak as they travel north February 7-8 to take on Western Wisconsin Stars and Eau Claire Area Stars. The Fury are now 14-6 on the season and 8-2 in the Badger Conference. The Lynx are 16-3 and 7-2 in the Badger Conference.

The Lynx also have two games coming up as they take on Viroqua on Thursday and Central Wisconsin Storm on Saturday.
