Tigers get hard-earned 1-0 win over WVU

Black River Falls and Wisconsin Valley Union met Tuesday night in Marshfield in the WiPH Game of the Week. As both teams came into the contest averaging just over two goals per game, it figured to be a low-scoring contest.

Savannah Holcomb scored on the power play midway through the third period for the visitors to account for the only tally in a 1-0 Black River Falls victory.

Josie Mathison stopped 26 shots in earning her second shutout of the year for the Tigers, while Madison Wagner-Durr made 20 saves for WVU.

The home team had a chance five minutes in when Mathison lost track of a rebound in the crease, but a Tiger defender cleared the puck before the Union player could tap in an easy goal.

WVU had a couple of opportunities later in the period, but Lauryn Broecker drew iron on a shot from close-in, and then Cadie Ash missed wide left on a breakaway attempt.

Mathison stopped 10 shots in the period, while Wagner-Durr repelled a trio of shots fired at her.

It was the Tigers' turn in the middle period, as both Hannah Lane and Sierra Steele rang shots off the left post in a span of a couple minutes in the middle of the period.

Wagner-Durr was the busier of the two goalies, making 11 saves in the period as Mathison kicked aside a half-dozen attempts.

Finally, while on the man advantage, the Tigers got on the board in the third.

Just 12 seconds into the penalty, Holcomb fired a wrister from the high slot through some traffic that snuck over the top of MWD's blocker and into the upper left quadrant for the eventual game-winner. Jenna Hausman and Hannah Long got helpers on the goal at the 5:03 mark.

"(Savannah's) smart, she puts it on net, and that's the key to scoring," noted BRF coach Oak Moser.

Black River Falls killed off a penalty with a few minutes left, and then after a goalie pull and another penalty, fought off the last 13 seconds of play while two skaters down.

"(The penalties) have been an ongoing problem for us," said Moser. "We're focused on that, but we have to keep moving and keep our sticks on the ice and we'll stay out of the sin bin."

Mathison completed her shutout with 10 saves, while Wagner-Durr finished with six stops in the period.

"It's her second (shutout) in the last week," said Moser. "She's always been solid for us, for four years."

Black River Falls has won four of its last five and improved to 7-9. The Union has been shut out in their last three games, dropping to 7-8-2.
