Late first period goals enough in 3-0 victory

The Hudson Raiders scored three goals in just over five minutes in the first period then held on to defeat the University School co-op Wildcats 3-0 in a non-conference girls’ hockey game played on Friday, January 24th at the Hudson Sports and Civic Center in Hudson.

Despite the three goals, Dan Carey, USM’s head coach, was pleased with the Wildcats’ play, “It was a great effort by the girls.  I thought we played one of our best games tonight.   These types of games help us get ready for February.”

The play in the game was active and competitive.  The save totals were low and close, indicating that the teams were skating back and forth and playing each other evenly.  The Wildcats’ goaltender, Sami Stommel, made 14 saves, while Alayna Kunshier, Hudson’s netminder, stopped every one of the 12 shots the Wildcats managed to put on Hudson’s net.

The Raiders made the difference with three goals in a short span of the opening period.  They scored their first goal at 9:44.  Rose Giblin took a faceoff in the left circle of the Wildcats’ zone.  After the drop, the puck skittered toward the goal line.  Mallory Thompson zoomed to it and immediately fired an acute angle shot on net.  The puck squeezed between the pipe and Stommel’s shoulder for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Hudson made it 2-0 just 11 seconds later. Giblin took the center ice face off and won it to the right to Chloe Hepfler who dumped it into the Wildcats zone.  Giblin sped after it, and snared it in the right corner.  She swung behind the net then flung the puck across the low slot back to Hepfler who had raced to the far post.   Hepfler one- timed it into the net at 9:55.

It only took the Raiders a few minutes more to score their next goal.  Taylor Wandschneider stick-checked the puck away from a Wildcat player along the right mid-boards in the Wildcats’ zone.  Nikki Olund skated after it.  Olund turned toward the crease. She moved in then jammed the puck under Stommel at 14:01.

The Wildcats were not about to capitulate.  They made it a game, outshooting their hosts 6-5 in the second period and playing with tenacity until the final buzzer.  But Hudson’s defense was tough; the Raiders held firm and gained the victory.

After the game, two of USM’s captains commented on the contest.

Jordan Bonk said, “I think the game was very good for us. We showed up and competed along with them for most of the game.  We kept fighting very well and hard. We didn’t let the score affect our play.”

Zoe Uihlein agreed, saying, “I think that this game was overall a great game for us. We put in our total effort in all three periods except for a little five-minute blip in the first. However, our total effort and play during this game was a great way to start off the weekend.”

The win gave Hudson a 5-10-1 record.  The Raiders have a record of 1-3 in the Big Rivers Conference.  They play the Eau Claire Area Stars in a conference game at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28th at the Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.

USM is now 4-9-4 and 2-1-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats continue their weekend trip to the northwestern part of the state when they play the St. Croix Valley Fusion in a non-conference game on Saturday, January 25th at the Wildcat Centre in River Falls.
