Sophomore goal scorer notches a pair in 4-1 win over USM

Madison Anderson scored two breakaway goals to lead the Bay Area Ice Bears to a 4-1 victory over the University School co-op in an Eastern Shores Conference girls’ hockey game on Saturday, January 18 at the Cornerstone Ice Center in Ashwaubenon.

The Wildcats came into the game confidently after playing a very good game the previous night when they defeated the Lakeshore Lightning.  The Ice Bears slammed the door shut on their visitors’ hopes.  They out skated the Wildcats all evening, convincing everyone in attendance at their Senior Night that they were the night’s better team.

Although the action in the game was lopsided, the save totals were nearly equal.  Sami Stommel, the Wildcats’ goaltender made 12 saves, while her counterpart Jenna Christophersen made 13 saves in the net for the Ice Bears.

The Ice Bears made four shots count.  Anderson scored their first goal at 11:13 of the first period. Stacey Cloute obtained the puck along the right boards in center ice.  She passed it ahead to Kamdyn McCracken who took off down the boards.  Anderson joined her for a two-on-one.  The defenseman committed to McCracken, who passed it to Anderson.  Anderson moved in on Stommel and fired the puck past her.

Bay Area made it 2-0 on a similar play early in the second period.  Skating from behind the Ice Bears net, Aria Van De Hel sent the puck to Makayla Spejcher on the left boards. She centered it to Tessa Andrews who skated with it into the Wildcats zone then used a defenseman as a moving screen and fired the puck past Stommel at 1:44.

The Ice Bears move further ahead at 9:09 of the period.  On a centering breakout pass, McCracken received the puck from Alyssa Witttman.  McCracken saw Anderson speeding ahead and fed the puck to her. Anderson sped past a defenseman and went in on Stommel on a breakaway and scored.

Bay Area made it 4-0 early in the third period.  Spejcher scored the goal when she deked a defenseman near the Wildcats’ blue line, raced past her, then gunned a shot into the net from the slot.  Eliza Aiken and Andrews received credit for assists on the goal scored at 1:59.

The Wildcats salvaged some semblance of hockey prowess by scoring a power play goal in the game’s final minute.  Eiley Sheahan angled a defender off the puck behind the Bay Area net.  She sent the puck into the high slot.  Natalie Epperson skated to it from the point and backhanded the puck past Christophersen at 16:40.

The win gave Bay Area an 8-7-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Ice Bears play the Central Wisconsin Storm in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21 at Greenheck Field House in Schofield.

USM is 4-8-4 and 2-1-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference. The Wildcats hope to improve their play when they take on Hudson in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24 at the Hudson Ice and Civic Center.
