Freshman Armstrong stops 20 in win over Western WI

The weather did not stop the Western Wisconsin Stars from making the trip to Madison to take on the Metro Lynx, but the final result was a 2-1 loss to the Lynx.

From the drop of the puck the Stars would skate hard and pressure the Lynx early. The first several minutes were spent in the Lynx defensive zone. However, they would escape without giving up a goal. As the period would progress, a Lynx penalty would put the Stars on the power play. It wouldn’t take long for them to capitalize.

As the puck moved back to the blue line, Bailey Williams would rip a shot waist high through several bodies in front of Lynx goalie Addy Armstrong. Stars forward Ellie Brice would make a great deflection at the hash marks, tipping it down and into the net to make it 1-0.

The Lynx would respond with a power play goal of their own just a couple minutes later. Sydney Raaths would step in from below the top of the circle and let loose a top shelf, glove side shot beating Stars goaltender Lauren Sobczak. Assists would go to Ally Jacobsen and Rachel Mirwald and the period would end 1-1.

In the second both teams would trade shots and opportunities but neither goaltender would budge and the score would remain 1-1.

The third period saw the Lynx start to pick up the pace and pressure the Stars more than they had in the first two. Sobczak would make nine saves and keep the Lynx at bay until about the six minute mark.

The Stars had the puck deep in the Lynx zone and started a shift change. Lynx senior Alina Yazek would pick up a loose puck and fire a stretch pass to Raaths, springing her on a breakaway. Raaths would pull the puck to her backhand and tuck it in behind Sobczak to put the Lynx up 2-1.

The Stars would not give up. Late in the third, on the power play, they would fire a shot that would hit traffic in front and drop to the back door. One of the Stars forwards would finally corral the bouncing puck to get off a shot. However, Lynx defenseman Grace Bonnell would dive across and get a stick on it deflecting it to the corner.

With just a couple minutes left in regulation, Stars forward Erin Huerta would find herself alone behind the Lynx defense and heading in on a breakaway. However, a relentless backcheck by Lynx defenseman Ally Jacobsen would force her to shoot wide.

The Stars would pull Sobczak for the extra attacker but the Lynx stingy defense and goaltending would keep them at bay. Armstrong would have a solid game finishing the third period with nine saves and help secure the victory.
