In another tight girls’ hockey battle between Arrowhead and the University School co-op, the scoring was minimal and the goaltending good. The teams tied 1-1 in overtime in an Eastern Shores Conference game played on Wednesday, January 8 at USM.
The rivalry between the Milwaukee area foes continues to intensify. When they have played each other this season, each team has won a game, lost a game, and now tied a game. Who knows what will occur if they have to face each other again.
One thing for sure, the goaltending will be worth watching. It certainly was in the latest encounter. Arrowhead’s senior goalie, Emma Tate, who began the game with a .939 save percentage, made 26 saves. USM’s goaltender, sophomore, Sami Stommel, who entered the match with a .918 save percentage, stopped 18 of Arrowhead’s 19 attempts.
The action went back and forth all evening. In the first period, the teams seemed to be testing the waters. Neither team scored, and the shot totals were relatively low. The Wildcats barely outshot the Warhawks, 5-4.
The Wildcats scored the game’s first goal in the latter portion of the second period, during which they out shot Arrowhead, 13-8.
From a face off in the right circle of the Arrowhead zone, the puck bounced into the near corner. Sophomore Molly Guenther chased it down and passed it to the near point to junior defenseman Eiley Sheahan. Sheahan passed it back to Guenther. Guenther then sent it out front to junior Zoe Neudorfer who snapped it past Tate at 11:24.
Arrowhead tied the score at 6:44 of the third period. As the Warhawks forechecked, junior Avery Zwart stopped a Wildcat clearing attempt in the left circle and took a shot. Arrowhead had two forwards unmarked in front of Stommel. Junior Riley Hill took a stab at the rebound, but Stommel stopped it. She didn’t stop Shannon Dwyer’s follow-up. The sophomore forward jabbed the puck under Stommel to draw Arrowhead even in the scoring column.
The teams kept trying to score, but neither was successful in the remaining minutes of the third period.

In the eight-minute overtime, the teams’ defenses took control. The Wildcats managed just two shots on Tate while the Warhawks only took one on Stommel.
The Wildcats’ head coach, Dan Carey, commented on the game, “We had a good effort level tonight. The girls controlled much of the game but couldn’t find another goal. We are in a very tight conference, so there is a lot of hockey to be played.”
The Wildcats are now 3-6-4 and 1-0-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference. They play Hudson in the opening round of the Girls High School Hockey Classic, a tournament sponsored by the Milwaukee Admirals and Ticket King on Friday, January 10 at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Ice Arena. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
The tie left Arrowhead with a record of 7-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Eastern Shores Conference. The Warhawks take on the Brookfield Glacier in a conference contest at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9 at the Ponds of Brookfield.
