Two Goal Third Period Enough for Win

The Wisconsin Prep Hockey Game of the Week was a great game for the fans and players this week. The game featuring the Rock County Fury hosting the Fond du Lac Warbirds was worth the title.

With the Warbirds having a roster of 12 bringing their best is essential to winning. Netminder Hailee Scherer brought it on this day stopping many great chances giving her team a shot at winning. Rock County was able to get a couple of third period goals by Claudia Boehlke and Olivia Combs and goalie Olivia Cronin made it stand up for a 3-1 win.

Rock County held the majority of chances in the first period. On a power play Fury Captain Haley Knauf let off a blast and it flew thru traffic into the net setting off a celebration. But a mere second later the officials waved it off saying deflected in by a skate drawing a groan from the home team and their fans.

The Warbirds had the fans and team groan a little more shortly after. With the puck down by the crease, Sophia Koppa jabbed away at the puck and it finally went in under Fury goalie Olivia Cronin giving the Warbirds a 1-0 lead after one period, while being outshot 12-6.

The Fury kept up the pressure in the second period with nothing to show for it until Anika Einbeck changed that. Shooting from around the left circle she hit the far post and in for a 1-1 tie with Alyssa Knauf assisting. The period would end that way with shots 14-7 Fury in the period.

So it was gonna come down to the third period.

The Fury were able to get the lead for good. With just about five minutes gone in the period, Alyssa Knauf was able to get off a shot that was tipped in front by Boehlke going past Hailee Scherer for the 2-1 lead. With a little breathing room the Fury got an extra one on a goal by Olivia Combs, flipping up a puck into the goal off a shot by Sara Loerke. " I saw that Sara had the better angle so I made sure it didn't go behind the net and flipped it in," said Combs of the third goal.

The Fury took a late penalty and with the goalie pulled they were able to get the 3-1 win against an outnumbered but very good Warbird team.

Cronin knew she was gonna need her best effort in this one.

"Their goalie was having a great game stopping some great shots, putting the pressure on me."

Captain Anika Einbeck after this game was looking ahead to a very tough schedule this week. "Two big games this week in conference and we are hyping ourselves up and putting in the work because it pays off."
