Opportunities lead to Bluebird victory

Janesville winger Lucas Vogt is one of the fastest skaters on the team.

With that being said, the junior forward was able to score shorthanded after forcing a turnover, and quickly pounced on a loose puck to score the game winner late in a 5-4 victory over Oregon Friday night.

But it wasn't THAT easy. In fact it wasn't over until the final horn, as Oregon closed within one and had the puck real low but ran out of time.

Vogt got the Birds started off right. While killing a penalty, he picked up a loose puck at the Oregon blueline, sped in and was able to out-wait Panther goalie Colton Dailey before tucking the puck past him for a 1-0 lead. Oregon stuck to their plan on the power play and evened up the score on a goal by Laszlo Orosz. After the goal Janesville brought in freshman goalie Jaicy Campbell, who finished the first period unscathed.

The second period had both teams wanting to push the tempo. Both goalies were staying on top of their games. Janesville finally broke through with a tally by Ian Perkins.

Less than two minutes later Cayden Erickson was able to put the puck in the net for a 3-1 Janesville lead. Oregon however closed the gap to a goal with Joe Roemer scoring. Cayden Erickson got his second goal of the game and period giving Janesville a 4-2 lead thru two periods.

Period three was uneventful until Oregon scored with 5:23 left. Freshman Kyle Rohrer made it a one-goal game again. With a tight game shaping up  to end this one, Vogt was able to tap in a loose puck in a scramble in the crease. Oregon, however still working hard, was able to score with just over a minute left for a 5-4 deficit for the home team. The Birds were given a tripping penalty and with the extra attacker buzzed the Janesville net. However the Panthers ran out of time in front of the net and Janesville had a 5-4 win.

"We played well in the first and second periods but not in the third," said Vogt. "We were not playing our best in the third period but were able to pull it out."

Janesville goalie Jaicy Campbell had to put together a 21 save effort in the third period for the win. "I felt much relief when the buzzer went off."

Shots in the game were 34-15 with Oregon holding the advantage. Colton Dailey stopped 10 shots while the two Janesville goalies combined for 30 saves.
