Brookfield and Superior both entered Sunday morning’s game looking to reverse their fortune and post a mark in the win column. The Spartans had 3 wins coming into the game, but were looking for their first win against a Wisconsin team in the 2019-20 season. Brookfield was looking for their second win of the season.
Superior jumped to an early lead on a goal by Lucy Drougas with an assist from Arika Trentor at 2:33 of the first period. Jillian Reuille increased the Spartan lead to two with an unassisted goal at the 14:06 mark. Madelyn Franta converted a power play opportunity with ten seconds left in the first period. Callie Holmlund and Lily Walrath assisted on the goal. Superior led 3-0 at the end of the first period.
Emma Welch bumped the lead to 4 with Lily Walrath and Emma Fornengo at 1:31 of the second period. Twenty-two seconds later, Hadley Malcolmson put Brookfield on the board with an assist from Molly Cole to make the score 4-1. Arika Trentor broke into the scoring column with Brooklyn Burger and Callie Holmlund assisting with 10:01 left in the second period increasing the lead back to four. Hadley Malcolmson scored an unassisted goal with 5 seconds showing on the clock to make the score 5-2 at the end of two.
The Spartans put the game away in the third period. Superior’s Brooklyn Burger scored an unassisted goal at 2:45 of the period. Madelyn Franta increased the lead further with an unassisted goal twenty-five seconds later. Franta and Burger assisted on the final goal of the day scored by Lucy Drougas with 7:34 remaining in the game.
Superior will resume play on Saturday against St. Croix Valley in River Falls. Brookfield will travel to Onalaska on Saturday for their next game.
