Tight Battle Between Two Top Five Teams

The Culver’s Cup featured many interesting games throughout the weekend. The game for third place featured two teams ranked in the WiPH top six. The Fusion were coming in after a tough Saturday loss to the Metro Lynx, while Cap City was attempting to rebound from their first loss of the season at the hands of Wisconsin Valley Union.

The game was extremely tight with both teams featuring two of the top goaltenders in the state in Sydney Seeley of the Fusion and Lexi Holman for Cap City. The teams are well balanced with the speed leaning to St. Croix Valley. The first period ended as the game had started, deadlocked at zero. The Fusion peppered Holman with 15 shots, while limiting the Cougars to 4 shots on Seeley.

The second period saw St. Croix Valley take advantage of a power play opportunity. Bella Rasmuson scored with Jadyn Erickson and Amber DeLong assisting at 4:14 of the period.

Cap City tied the game at 5:40 of the third period. Audrey Wood scored from the low slot with an assist from Zephryn Jager. The two teams both continued to apply pressure, but the game moved into overtime.

Riley Ledford’s goal, sent the Cougar fans home happy, with an assist from Olivia Thompson at 3:46 of the extra period was the game winner. Seeley finished the game with 13 saves, while Holman had 37 saves for Cap City.

The Cougars will play their next on January 4th, when they host Viroqua in Badger Conference play. St. Croix Valley will resume play on Saturday, too. They will be hosting Superior.
