Team Play Leads to Championship

Lynx Overcome Stellar Weekend by Pistol Cowden

The 2019 Girls’ Culver’s championship game featured the Metro Lynx hosting the Wisconsin Valley Union. The Union advanced to the championship game with an overtime win against the Onalaska Hilltoppers on Friday and a 1-0 win over the Cap City Cougars on Saturday. The Lynx earned their berth with a 4-2 win over Sioux Falls on Friday and defeating the Fusion on Saturday 3-1.

The first period found both teams moving the puck, but neither team could slip the puck past the opposing goaltender. The Lynx out shot the Union 9 to 4 in the period.

Sydney Raaths gave the Lynx the early lead in the second period, when she scored at the 3:57 mark with Jenna Culp assisting on the goal. The Union were on their second power play opportunity, when there was a scramble in front of the Lynx’s netminder. The scrum resulted in a goal by Lauryn Broecker with Cadie Ash and Lyndsey Glodosky assisting on the play with 1 minute remaining in the period.  The period ended with the game tied at 1.

Rachel Mirwald put the Lynx up by one with a goal from the low slot with 13:19 showing on the clock. As Mirwald was gliding through the slot, Lauren Johnson fed the puck to Raaths and Raaths passed it to Mirwald.  The Lynx closed out the scoring at 5:18 of the period on a goal by Grace Bonnell with Lauren Johnson and Hannah Kolpien assisting. The Lynx won 3-1.

Pistol Cowden finished the game with 44 saves. She had 129 saves in the 3 games and allowed a total of 4 goals.  Camryn McKersie came up big for the Lynx with 11 saves in the game and had 30 saves in the two games she played in goal.
