Edgewood and ECM take care of business

Day Two of the Showdown in Titletown opened up with the Madison Edgewood Crusaders downing the SPASH Panthers 4 to 0 in a noon start at the Cornerstone Ice Arena.

The first period was fairly even in terms of time of possession, but the Crusaders did a better job of getting the puck to the net. Midway through the frame Cooper Fink found Payton Smith alone in the slot and fed him the puck. Smith wasted little time getting a shot of and beating Panther goalie Landen Kawleski through the five hole.

Cody Menzel provided the only scoring in the second frame when he escaped the Edgewood zone for a clean short-handed breakaway.

Smith kept his scoring touch going in the third period, working a smooth 2 on 1 with Aidan Lenz who tapped the puck in, and then notching his second goal with just 15 seconds left.

Edgewood goalie Zach Walker fought off the Panther’s third period attack to keep his shutout intact.

In the second game, the Superior Spartans dug themselves a hole in the first period and never got out, falling to the Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes 5 to 1.

The Spartans took a major checking from behind penalty three minutes into the game and ECM capitalized with goals from Joe Kelly and Carter Ottum.

Max Savaloja added a third goal when he shot from below the goal line and banked it off of Spartan goalie Jamin Durfee’s leg pad and into the net.

Superior picked up the pace in the second period and did everything but put the puck behind ECM goalie Kyler Strenke. The Old Abes held them off and picked up their fourth goal when Carter Olson scored with 13 seconds left.

Eau Claire increased their lead to 5-0 in the third period with a goal by Christian Tavare, then shifted into a defensive mode. Superior did score late in the game on a 5 on 3 power play.
