Stars outshoot Tigers 35-14 in narrow win

It didn't look good for the home team after 17 minutes of play, as the Fox Cities Stars tallied the first two goals and looked to run away with the contest against host Black River Falls at the Milt Lunda Memorial Arena Friday night.

The Stars would get a hard-earned 3-2 decision over Black River Falls in the Eau Claire/BRF Holiday Tournament.

Mckayla Zilisch rushed down the right side and knocked the puck past BRF goalie Josie Mathison with six minutes left in the opening period for a 1-0 Stars lead. Annika Horman and Hanna Hiltunen earned helpers on the play.

Then a few seconds after the rink announcer called 'one minute, one minute left in the period,' Zilisch tapped in a rebound for two-thirds of a natural hattie, with a helper for Alaina Schauf and Horman for the two-goal advantage.

Freshman goalie Ella Sciborski—originally from the Black River Falls area—stopped four pucks for Fox Cities while Mathison made nine stops for BRF.

But the Tigers scored once at the beginning of the middle period and once at the very end to knot the score at two as the team skated off for the second intermission.

Savannah Holcomb won a battle for a loose puck in the high slot, and then moved to her right before snapping a shot that beat Sciborski to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 1:18 mark of the period.

Penalties marred the middle of the stanza, but a FCS penalty with less than 30 seconds to go would cost the Stars.

Jenna Hausman fired a pass from the right corner through traffic that Lexie Hagen neatly caught on the back-door and one-timed the puck past Sciborski to tie the game at two with three seconds left in the middle period.

Saves in the period: Sciborski 6, Mathison 10.

Horman scored the game-winner with 1:23 left on a loose puck in the slot that she lifted over the BRF goalie. Maddy Jablonski got an assist on the play.

Mathison came off with 53 seconds left for an extra attacker but the Tigers would be unable to tally the equalizer.

Sciborski made a pair of saves in the final period for a game total of 12, while Mathison had 13 saves to end with 32 on her evening.
