Eytcheson scores twice, Quimby stops 25 in 4-2 win

The last time she played in the Milt Lunda Memorial Arena, Emma Quimby stopped 13 shots as the Hayward Lady Canes tied host Black River Falls 0-0 on December 22, 2018.

Just over one year later, she made 25 saves as the Lady Canes defeated the Rock County Fury 4-2 in the Eau Claire/Black River Falls Holiday Tournament Friday night.

The Canes started off strong and fast, getting a goal from Lily Eytcheson just over five minutes in for the 1-0 lead. Her back-hander from the high slot earned assists for sister Taylor Eytcheson and Riley Sprenger.

Rock County tied the game six minutes later on an unassisted goal by Haley Knauf. The senior forward grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated in on Quimby, and snuck the puck past the glove side of the Hayward netminder to tie the score at one each.

With just over two minutes left in the period, Alex Pieterek gathered up the puck at center ice, skated down the right side, and chipped the biscuit over the glove of Fury goalie Olivia Cronin for a 2-1 Hayward lead.

The period ended with 10 saves for Quimby, and four for Cronin.

Lily Eytcheson scored the only goal in the middle period—her second of the contest—to give the Lady Canes a 3-1 lead. Her goal at the 9:57 mark was assisted by Kennedy Sprenger and Soile Doyle.

Rock County had a pair of power play chances late in the period, but could not convert as Hayward skated off with a two-goal lead after two.

Saves in the period: Quimby 7, Cronin 12.

Alyssa Knauf cut the lead to 3-2 early in the third with a shot that beat Quimby from the low right side. Haley Knauf and Anika Einbeck had helpers on the play at the 2:42 mark.

But it would be Hayward that answered five minutes later on a rebound putback by Riley Sprenger, with an assist to sister Kennedy Sprenger to account for the final tally.

Cronin came off with just under two minutes left to play for the extra attacker for the Fury, but they were unable to score as Hayward grabbed the 4-2 win.

Quimby stopped eight shots in the period for a game total of 25, while Cronin made 10 stops for a total of 26.
