Raaths, Byce lead Lynx in 4-2 win over SD foe

Former UW-Eau Claire Blugold player and Stevens Point youth coach Paul Harbaugh brought his Sioux Falls, SD team in for the Culver Cup this year. He had been looking for strong competition for his team this year. He found it in the Metro Lynx.

Lynx forwards Sydney Raaths and Kaya Byce would each have 2 goals to lead the Lynx over the Flyers, 4-2.

The first period saw the Lynx come out hard and generate quality scoring opportunities. However, Flyers goaltender Ava Krabbenhoft made several saves to keep the game tight. The Lynx were finally able to break through at 6:42 when Sydney Raaths picked up a loose puck in the corner, curled just inside the top of the circle, firing a shot back across the goalie's body beating her high to the stick side. The first period ended 1-0 in favor of the Lynx with Camryn McKersie making 6 saves and Krabbenhoft with 9.

The second period started with the Flyers taking control and outworking the Lynx. After winning an offensive zone face off, Kaija Mork beat the Lynx defenders to the puck in the corner and went behind the net. The Flyers Emma Ramsey found space in front of the Lynx net, received the pass from Mork and fired home a shot from about 3 feet out. This gave the Flyers a big lift and they carried the attack for several minutes pinning the Lynx in their own end.

The Lynx were able to gain back control and pressure the Flyers. At 8:53, Sydney Raaths would make a much similar play as her first goal, walking across the middle and shooting across her body and beating Flyers goalie to the stick side to make it 2-1.

The Lynx would add another goal when Kaya Byce would deflect a shot from Grace Bonnell past Krabbenhoft to make it 3-1 with just 46 seconds left in the period.

The third period saw the Lynx pressuring the Flyers but Krabbenhoft came up with several outstanding saves and stopping multiple breakaways to keep it close. However, Byce would make it 4-1 when she picked up a loose puck and whistled a low shot into the back of the net.

The Lynx continued to apply pressure but Sioux Falls would not give up. Their hard work paid off with scoring opportunities. At 8:36, Flyers Grace Halvorson caused a turn over deep in their offensive zone. This led to Flyers Gaby Schroeder finding herself alone in front of the Lynx net. She faked a shot and pulled it backhand behind McKersie to make it 4-2.

With two and half minutes left, the Lynx were pressuring. The high forward fired a shot that was blocked by Gaby Schroeder and she raced on a breakaway against McKersie. Schroeder faked left and went right driving hard and shooting. McKersie shot out a pad deflecting the shot to the corner keeping the Lynx up 4-2.

The Flyers would pull the goalie late trying to close the gap. They would get an opportunity when the Flyers player, Rylan Peska, found room in front. Her team mate Kaija Mork won the race to a loose puck in the corner and slid a pass to Peska. From just below the hash marks, she one timed the shot but was denied by McKersie at the buzzer. Final 4-2 Lynx. Krabbenhoft finished with 24 saves and McKersie with 14.
